You made it to Dubai.
Now own every step.

The first 30 days decide everything โ€” whether you feel settled, confident, and in control, or drowning in government websites at midnight. This checklist is the difference.

Every step. In the order that actually matters. With the details nobody else tells you โ€” and your progress saved every time you return.

Everything flows from a confirmed arrival date. Sort this before worrying about anything else.

Get a UAE SIM card at the airportDay 1

Etisalat and Du both have kiosks in arrivals. Don't leave the airport without one โ€” you need it immediately.

Our take: Etisalat (now 'e&') has better nationwide coverage. Du is slightly cheaper for international calls. For most new residents, Etisalat wins. Prepaid tourist SIM: AED 55โ€“100. Upgrade to monthly once your Emirates ID arrives โ€” much better value.

!
Apply for your Emirates IDDo this first

This card unlocks your bank account, Ejari, driving licence โ€” everything. Every day you delay costs you. Go to a typing centre within 48 hours of landing.

Where to go: Any ICP-approved typing centre (Google 'Emirates ID typing centre near me'). Bring originals of passport, residence visa, and one passport photo.

What happens: They fill the ICP form (~AED 30โ€“70, 15 min), book your biometrics, give you a confirmation slip. Card arrives in 5โ€“10 working days.

Key insight: Banks accept your confirmation slip reference number before the card arrives. Start your bank application the same week using this number.
!
Open a bank accountWeek 1

No account, no salary. No Emirates ID yet? A digital bank gets you running in 10 minutes, passport only. Don't wait.

No Emirates ID yet? Wio Bank or Mashreq Neo โ€” 10 minutes, passport only, free. Receive your first salary immediately.

Once you have Emirates ID: Emirates NBD for full-service (1,000+ ATMs). FAB if you earn AED 10K+. HSBC for global banking.

Documents needed: Passport + residence visa + salary letter + proof of address (hotel booking works).

๐Ÿ’ธ Use Wise for transfers home โ€” saves AED 200โ€“400 per transfer โ†’
๐Ÿ Week 2 โ€” settle in properly0 / 2 done
Register your EjariWeek 2

Your tenancy legally doesn't exist without this. Schools, banks, and visa renewals all need it. Push your landlord โ€” don't let them delay you.

What it is: 'Ejari' (Arabic: 'my rent') is Dubai's mandatory tenancy registration โ€” a QR-coded certificate proving you legally live where you say you do.

Who registers it: Your landlord or agent should do this. You can self-register via the Dubai REST app (AED 220).

You need it for: Bank accounts, school enrolment, vehicle registration, visa renewal. Save the PDF somewhere permanent.
Connect DEWA (electricity & water)Week 2

15 minutes on the DubaiNow app. You need your Ejari number first. Don't leave this until you're in the dark โ€” literally.

How to do it: DEWA app โ†’ 'Move In / New Connection'. Need: Emirates ID, Ejari certificate, security deposit (AED 2,000 apartments / AED 4,000 villas). Activated within 24 hours.

Note: Many buildings use district cooling (Empower/Emicool) for AC โ€” separate from DEWA. Your landlord will tell you which. Register separately โ€” cooling is often your biggest utility bill in summer.
๐Ÿ“‹Month 1 โ€” fully established0 / 2 done
Sort your health insuranceMonth 1

Legally required in Dubai. Your employer's plan almost never covers what you need. One hospital visit without proper cover = AED 1,000โ€“5,000+.

What your employer provides: The Essential Benefits Plan (EBP) โ€” legal minimum. Covers emergencies but limits specialists, dental, mental health, repatriation.

What expats need: International plan with Mediclinic, Cleveland Clinic, or American Hospital access. From ~$150/month.

Most trusted for Dubai expats: Allianz Worldwide Care โ€” recognised everywhere, strong claims process.

๐Ÿฅ Get a free Allianz expat insurance quote โ†’
Convert your driving licenceMonth 1

Dubai without a car is Dubai on hard mode. 30+ countries get direct conversion โ€” no test. Most expats don't realise they qualify.

Direct conversion (no test): UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and 30+ others. Go to any RTA-approved driving school with your foreign licence โ€” UAE licence in 1โ€“3 days.

What you need: Emirates ID + passport + original foreign licence + eye test (~AED 30) + passport photo.

Cost: AED 400โ€“800 depending on nationality.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งIf you have children0 / 2 done
Start school applications before you landFamilies

The best schools have 6โ€“18 month waitlists. If you wait until you arrive, you're already too late. Apply the moment your move is confirmed.

The reality: GEMS, Repton, Nord Anglia, Brighton College โ€” all have waitlists. Apply 6โ€“12 months early and stay in regular contact with admissions teams.

Check KHDA ratings first: inspect.khda.gov.ae โ€” only consider 'Outstanding' or 'Good' rated schools.

Curriculum: British (GCSE/A-Level) has the most options. Match to where your child may attend university.

Documents needed: Previous school reports, vaccination records, passport copies, passport photos.
Sponsor your family's residence visasFamilies

Once you have your Emirates ID and employment visa, you can sponsor your spouse and children. Each person needs their own visa and ID. Start this process early.

Who can be sponsored: Spouse, children under 18 (sons under 25 in full-time education), unmarried daughters of any age, parents (higher salary requirement).

Minimum salary: AED 4,000/month (or AED 3,000 + free accommodation) to sponsor a spouse.

Documents per family member: Passport, passport photo, marriage/birth certificate (legally attested โ€” do this before leaving your home country), medical fitness certificate.

Process time: 2โ€“4 weeks per person. A PRO service (~AED 1,500โ€“3,000) is worth it to avoid rejections.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ
When to go Essential
Octโ€“Apr: Perfect weather. Mayโ€“Sep: 40โ€“47ยฐC outside. Every building is air-conditioned, but plan outdoor activities for early morning and after 7pm only.

VoIP calls are restricted Know this
WhatsApp calls, FaceTime audio/video, and Skype are restricted in the UAE. WhatsApp messaging works fine. Use your local SIM for actual voice calls.

Dress code Know this
Beachwear at the beach. Smart casual in malls and restaurants. Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and souks. Dubai is very relaxed by Gulf standards โ€” common sense is all you need.
Business Travel Guide

You're here to do deals.
We'll handle the rest.

Dubai rewards people who arrive prepared. Whether it's your first trip or your fifteenth, the same details trip people up every time. Here's how to avoid every one of them.

What business travellers actually need

The details that make or
break the trip

The logistics that cost people meetings, deals, and credibility โ€” sorted before you land.

๐Ÿข
Where to set up meetings
DIFC and Downtown are the two business districts. If someone says "meet in Dubai," they almost certainly mean one of these two. A hotel lobby is not where serious meetings happen here.
Best venues in DIFC โ†’
๐Ÿค
Etiquette that actually matters
First meetings are relationship-building, not deal-closing. Bring physical business cards. Never schedule on Fridays. During Ramadan 2026 (Feb 18โ€“Mar 20), afternoon meetings vanish โ€” plan around it.

๐Ÿ“ต
VoIP is restricted โ€” tell your team
WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, and Skype voice/video are restricted in the UAE. WhatsApp messaging works. Get a local SIM at arrivals (AED 100). Tell your colleagues before you leave โ€” not when they can't reach you.
Connectivity guide โ†’
๐Ÿ“…
The working week is Sundayโ€“Thursday
UAE weekend is Fridayโ€“Saturday. Book your return flight Sunday morning, not Friday. Friday morning in the business districts is completely empty. This is the mistake every first-timer makes.
Calendar tips โ†’
๐Ÿจ
Where to stay for business
DIFC, Downtown, or Business Bay only โ€” you'll halve your commute. The Four Seasons DIFC puts you inside the financial district. Avoid Marina unless your clients are based there.

Business trip checklist ๐Ÿ’ผ

Every time. No exceptions.

Book meetings before you land โ€” not after
Dubai decision-makers have full diaries. "I'll reach out when I land" means three days staring at your hotel minibar.
Get a local SIM at arrivals โ€” VoIP is restricted
Etisalat business SIM at arrivals, AED 100. Tell your team before you leave โ€” not when they can't reach you.
Check Ramadan dates โ€” 2026 is Feb 18โ€“Mar 20
Business hours shorten, lunch meetings vanish, evenings are when everything happens. Plan with it, not against it.
Download Careem Black for client pickups
Arriving in a Careem Black says you know the city. A confused ride-share arrival says something different.
Bring physical business cards
Exchanging cards is still a genuine ritual in first meetings here. Don't be the person fumbling with your phone.
Allow 40 minutes between cross-city meetings
DIFC to Marina is 35 min in traffic. DIFC to Deira is 40 min. Never schedule back-to-back across districts.
Return flight on Sunday morning โ€” not Friday
Friday morning in the business district is a ghost town. Sunday is when the city is back at full speed.
